Factors Affecting Door Soundproofing
Noise isolation of the entrance metal door depends on design factors and factors associated with the implementation of installation standards.
Inexpensive models are most often not equipped with special protection against the passage of sounds inside the room, and on expensive systems such as Torex, they initially mount soundproofing. But, with improper installation, even expensive doors do not provide reliable protection.
The reasons for low noise insulation may be the following factors:
- Door device. When assembling the door frame and the web, they can use a single-contour profile, which does not allow to achieve a high degree of isolation from external noise. The double-circuit profile has higher soundproofing characteristics.
- Sheet thickness. Thicker sheets of metal are preferable to obtain reliable sound insulation and vibration damping.
- Finishing the canvas. If the door leaf is sheathed with MDF, lining or eco leather on one or two sides, its noise protection characteristics are improved.
- Material used for internal filling. Traditional polystyrene foam and corrugated cardboard, do not have high soundproofing characteristics, it is more efficient to use mineral insulation or foam.
- Seal quality. If the sealant glued around the perimeter of the canvas does not provide a tight hold, sound windows remain through which noise enters the apartment.
- Features of the installation. Installation errors may occur. Most often, installers are negligent in closing slopes.
Ways to increase the sound insulation of the front door
Before proceeding to the soundproofing of the entrance metal door with your own hands, it is advisable to find the true reason for the penetration of extraneous noise.
To increase the sound insulation of the box, perform the following steps:
- remove the old seal and install new material;
- eliminate voids in the places of contact of the box and the base;
- insulate threshold rails;
- install decorative protective pads from the inside of the room.
To improve the soundproofing of the front door, the following work is carried out:
- change the internal insulator to a material with higher characteristics;
- instead of a sheet of iron indoors, fiberboard, MDF or PVC are finished;
- the outer and inner surfaces are covered with eco leather or dermatin.
Soundproofing materials for entrance doors
Sealers are the following materials: rubber, silicone, foam, plastopolymers.
Artificial rubber is considered the best sealant.
The following materials are used as filler:
Basalt mineral wool. The most acceptable material for organizing sound and thermal insulation of paintings. Minvata has a low cost, excellent resistance to open fire and chemicals, non-hygroscopic, material service life more than 50 years,
Disadvantage: when the material gets wet, the sound and heat insulation characteristics deteriorate by 10%.
Styrofoam. Inexpensive and effective as a sound and heat insulator material. At a low price, it has a long service life and low hygroscopicity, but it is flammable.
Foamed polyurethane. A hard version of this material is used to fill the door leafs. It is a noise absorber, non-hygroscopic, has a long service life. Disadvantages: high cost, flammability.
Penoplex. This material is a reliable sound absorber, retains heat, is not hygroscopic, but at the same time has a high cost and is not resistant to open fire. In addition, penoplex is a favorite treat for rodents.
Styrofoam. Of the disadvantages of this material, only combustibility is detected, otherwise the foam is optimal in terms of price and consumer properties.
Polypropylene has a long service life (more than 50 years), is immune to the effects of chemicals, has excellent soundproofing properties and low weight.
Corrugated cardboard. Filler with the lowest cost. A significant drawback is the increased hygroscopicity, as a result of which it is not recommended to use corrugated cardboard in the outer doors.
Isolon. This material is obtained by treating polyethylene with gas. Isolon is considered an excellent material for providing sound and heat insulation of any surfaces. It is not hygroscopic, easy to cut in size, has a low weight and a long shelf life, but has a high price.
Synthetic winterizer. It does not burn, it is a good heat and sound insulator, it is optimal in terms of cost and consumer properties.
Vibroplast. Self-adhesive material based on aluminum foil. It is used in mechanical engineering. Easily attached to a metal surface, provides high protection against extraneous noise, but has a high cost.
Splen. It has a small thickness (up to 4 mm), while providing excellent sound insulation. It is used in conjunction with other sound and heat insulating materials.
Bimast. It is used as a gasket between the iron base and the main sound absorber. It does not withstand temperatures above 40 degrees - it melts. For application to metal, the use of special tools will be required.
Soundproofing instructions for the door
Before making soundproofing of the front door in the apartment with your own hands, they buy seals, insulation materials and prepare the tool.
To increase the insulating properties, upholstery, seal sticker and replacement of the internal soundproofing are made.
Upholstery
Upholstery from the outside and inside allows you to get a higher degree of soundproofing of the room and, in addition, is a decorative decoration of the canvas.
The upholstery process consists of the following actions:
- the cloth is laid on a flat surface;
- dismantle handles, locks, peephole and old upholstery with a backing;
- the surface of the canvas is cleaned of the remnants of the previous coating and degreased;
- vibration protection is glued to the canvas;
- soundproofing material is placed on the sealant over vibration protection;
- excess cut along the perimeter;
- they fix the upholstery material, a special crate is installed to fasten the upholstery;
- install the fittings, and return the canvas to the box.
Sealant
Soundproof the door with a sealant as follows:
- Choose a tape seal. The length of the material should be greater than the length of the perimeter of the canvas by 150-200 mm, thickness - within 3 mm;
- The place where it is supposed to stick the seal is degreased with a solvent;
- For the convenience of joining the ends, the initial edge is cut off at 45 degrees. Glue the sealant from the upper right edge. Do not stretch the tape;
- Sizing is performed around the perimeter. At the junction, the end edge is also cut off at 45 degrees;
- After gluing, carefully tighten the seal.
Filler
How to improve the sound insulation of the front door using a new filler? First you need to make sure that the design of the blade is collapsible. With a non-separable design, you will have to do the external sound insulation with upholstery.
To change the filler in the canvas perform the following steps:
- the cloth is removed and laid on a flat surface;
- dismantle locks, handles and peephole;
- remove the decorative trim;
- remove the old filler;
- an adhesive is applied in stripes to the inner surface of the web;
- stack a new filler;
- small voids are clogged with pieces of filler;
- the decorative trim is fastened again;
- install accessories;
- the finished canvas is returned to the box.
Soundproofing methods for wooden doors
New buildings are initially equipped with iron doors to the apartment, but in private buildings it is often necessary to insulate a wooden product.
How to soundproof the front door of wood correctly? It is recommended to increase this characteristic in two ways:
- Using a sealant.
- Using eco leather as upholstery.
The method of gluing the perimeter of a wooden door does not differ from the method of gluing a metal door.
The upholstery of a wooden canvas with eco leather is performed in the following sequence:
- The canvas is laid on a flat hill;
- Disassembled accessories;
- On the perimeter, stripes of eco-leather are attached with a width of 150 mm face down. The overhang of the strip protrudes halfway across the perimeter;
- Eco skin or dermatin is cut with a margin of 50 mm on all sides;
- Thin insulation (synthetic winterizer) using a furniture stapler, mounted on the surface of the canvas;
- Eco skin is rolled along the surface of the door and secured around the perimeter;
- Rollers are rolled from batting and placed on originally reinforced strips. The ends of the strips are closed, forming a lining around the perimeter. Fasten strips with decorative nails;
- Install fittings;
- The canvas is installed in place.
