Door frame insulation
Insulation of the entrance metal door should begin with the elements of the box. If the box is made of a corner, then the insulation can only be made at the junction of the box with the doorway. In this case, the gaps are filled with foam, and excess insulation is cut off with a construction knife. If the box is made of a pipe of rectangular or square section, the insulation is placed inside the profile.
The better to insulate
To insulate the door frame, use foam or loose insulation (sawdust, expanded clay).
Polyurethane foam It is used to eliminate gaps between the box and the doorway, as well as to fill the cavities of the box elements made of profile.
Loose heaters apply only to profiled frames. Profile filling occurs through a technological hole drilled in the upper part of the box. The diameter of the hole should allow the largest fractions of the filler to pass.
This method has a significant drawback: it is impossible to ensure that the bulk space of the box is filled with bulk materials. As a result of uneven filling, voids are formed that freeze. Therefore, the use of bulk insulation is possible only in production conditions, when assembling the box in the workshop.
Materials and tools
To warm the box, the following tools and materials will be required:
- electric drill;
- metal drills with a diameter equal to the diameter of the nozzle of the cylinder with mounting foam;
- mounting foam;
- construction knife.
Instructions for insulation
To fill the door frame with foam, it will be necessary to prepare technological holes in increments of 500 mm. Through these openings, the internal space of the profile is filled with foam. Excess foam escaping through openings must be removed with a construction knife.
The cracks between the door frame and the doorway are cleaned from the old insulation, moisten and fill with foam. Excess foam is removed using a construction knife, after which the place of contact between the box and the wall is masked with putty.
Door leaf insulation
Cheap Chinese doors are usually made without internal insulation, so the owners have to modify the structure on their own.
The better to insulate
Before you insulate the entrance metal door in the apartment, you need to determine the type of filler of the interior space of the canvas. Depending on the internal structure of the door, use:
- polystyrene plates or polystyrene;
- bulk materials (sawdust, expanded clay);
- polyurethane foam;
- heat-insulating mineral plates.
Foam is considered more reliable and durable, but because of its high cost it is not often used, foam and mineral wool insulation are much more popular.
Materials and tools
Before you insulate the iron door from the inside, you will need to purchase material and prepare the necessary tool:
- material selected as a heater;
- polyethylene film;
- wooden bars with a section corresponding to the thickness of the inner space of the door leaf;
- self-tapping screws;
- metal amplifiers of a wooden frame (corners, profile);
- electric drill;
- construction knife;
- liquid Nails;
- hacksaw;
- screwdriwer set.
Before you insulate the entrance iron door from the outside, you will additionally have to purchase:
- dermantine or eco-leather;
- felt matter.
Instructions for insulation
Insulation works on the inside and outside of the canvas are different. Most often, the door is insulated internally, as in this case it has to be disassembled.
Inside
To place a heater inside a metal door, you will need to perform the following steps:
- the door is removed from the hinges and mounted on a hill;
- dismantle handles, locks and latches;
- dismantle the fiberboard sheet from the inside of the door;
- perform measurements of the internal space for the preparation of the wooden frame;
- separate elements for the frame are cut from the bar;
- adhesive is applied inside the door leaf and a plastic film is laid;
- assemble the frame (the assembly should take into account the location of the locks and through handles);
- to enhance the rigidity of the frame, corner joints are reinforced with iron corners;
- inside the cells of the frame, a heater is laid;
- glue is applied to the crate, after which they are covered with plastic wrap;
- small gaps and gaps not filled with insulation are filled with mounting foam;
- the internal sheet of fiberboard is returned to its place and fixed with screws;
- the door is hung on hinges and inserted handles, locks and latches.
Outside
If necessary, sheathe eco-leather steel door from the outside, perform the following work:
- The door is removed from the hinges and laid on a hill.
- Felt insulation is cut off in size and glued to the door leaf with glue (20 mm indent is made along the perimeter of the leaf).
- A cloth made of eco-leather or dermantine is cut with an excess of the dimensions of the canvas by 50 mm.
- Dermantin is glued with a bend to the inner side of the door leaf, while it is necessary to observe uniform tension of the material.
- A metal tape is pulled along the perimeter of the door leaf, fixing it with self-tapping screws. The tape serves as an additional fastener for the skin.
To obtain a decorative surface, you can additionally fix the material on the door surface using special self-tapping screws with figured heads.
Technological clearance warming
The better to insulate
The technological gap is usually 20-25 mm - this is the distance from the wall to the outer edge of the box. It’s best to fill this gap with foam.
In some cases, door installers immediately cover the technological gap with an ordinary mortar of cement and sand, but this option cannot be considered as insulation.
Cement is not a heater, but rather allows the cold to penetrate the apartment. In this case, due to uneven shrinkage, gaps may occur in the technological gap.
Materials and tools
To insulate the gap, the following materials and tools will be required:
- mounting foam;
- Scotch;
- polyethylene film;
- scissors;
- mounting gun (spraying foam with a standard nozzle will be inconvenient);
- construction knife.
Instructions for insulation
Thermal insulation of the technological gap is carried out in the following sequence:
- From the side of the apartment, the platband is removed at the point of contact of the wall and the box.
- From the inside, at the junction of the box to the wall, a plastic film is attached using tape.
- Remove the clypeus from the outside.
- Outside, in the technological gap, it is necessary to moisturize with a thin brush or spray gun. A humidified environment will accelerate the curing process of the mounting foam.
- The foam bottle is installed in the mounting gun and is thoroughly shaken.
- The first layer is applied with a thin tape. When squeezing foam, you need to ensure that the track does not interrupt.
- After the expansion of the first layer, after 20 minutes, they begin to apply the second layer with the expectation that, when expanding, the foam does not go beyond the perimeter of the box.
- After complete hardening of the insulation, the protective film on the inside of the door is removed.
- Platbands return to their place.
If, when expanding the insulation, part of the foam is outside the box, it is cut off with a construction knife.
Thermal insulation of the narthex
If you blow in the place of contact of the door leaf with the box, you will need to insulate the narthex. Drafts can occur when the edge of the web is not tightly attached to the jamb due to deviations from the specified dimensions.
The better to insulate
Thermal insulation of the narthex is carried out by gluing the inside of the door leaf adjacent to the doorframe with special self-adhesive tapes with different sections.
Most often, a tape with a round or oval cross section is used, but for gaps of 3 mm or more, it is recommended to use a sealant with a cross section in the form of the letter R.
Materials and tools
To warm the iron door around the perimeter of the narthex, the following materials and tools will be needed:
- tape insulation of the required section;
- liquid solvent for degreasing the surface;
- scissors.
Instructions for insulation
Before proceeding to the sticker of the tape insulation, it is necessary to degrease the surface of the metal, for which a liquid solvent and a piece of foam rubber are used.
Tape insulation is glued along the entire height of the door leaf, departing from the outer edge of 3-5 mm. When installing the insulation, it should be firmly pressed to the surface of the door leaf to get a reliable connection.
Tensioning the sealant during installation is not recommended, since the tension will not allow to obtain high-quality bonding of surfaces.
How to insulate a door if it goes outside
In private homes or cottages, there is also a need to warm the street iron door. Given that the door is constantly affected by weather changes and seasonal changes, it is necessary to responsibly treat the material that will be used inside the door leaf.
The following materials act as a suitable insulation for a street door:
- polystyrene foam;
- Styrofoam;
- expanded clay.
These materials have minimal hygroscopicity, so temperature and humidity differences will not affect their thermal insulation properties.
The process of warming street metal doors does not differ from the process of working with apartment doors.
