Some ladies fundamentally do not accept bouquets from gentlemen - do not, they say, give a woman dead flowers. But there are cases when this argument does not work. Growing a rose from a bouquet at home is no more difficult than getting a green onion on the windowsill. Just think: one rooted cuttings can be turned into a whole bush and enjoy its flowering every season. The main thing is to do everything correctly and consistently.
The choice of roses from a bouquet
We’ll immediately warn about a fly in the ointment: you need to choose a fairly fresh rose for germination, which could stand in the vase for another 2-3 days. It's a pity, of course, to ruin the bouquet ahead of time, but it will be much more likely to root.
If you are planning to sprout the rose you just presented, keep the bouquet clean from day one. Change the water daily or at least every other day. Otherwise, the process of decay will begin in the stem.
The second important point - it is better to prepare several cuttings. If roses with long stems, then from one you can get several copies.
A rosette that will give life to new shrubs should be healthy, not faded, with no signs of damage. On the stem and leaves should not be spots and rotting areas.
Cutting preparation
The main thing that should be on the handle is 3 or 5 buds, from which new shoots will subsequently grow. The kidneys are located in the internodes, directly above the leaves.
The most promising is considered a stalk with a thickness of 5 mm or more, with 3-5 buds, obtained from the middle part of the stem from 15 to 30 cm long.
Cuttings are important to cut correctly. There should be an oblique slice below, a straight line above:
- The upper cut is done quite close to the top sheet - you need to leave a “stump” about a centimeter or a half. If you leave too long an edge, it will begin to dry out or, worse, rot.
- The lower part is cut off at an angle of 45 degrees, so that the cut line runs towards the lower kidney and is quite close to it (no more than a centimeter should remain).
What to do with leaves? Everything is simple here - you can leave only the top, cutting it halfway.
Stimulant treatment
So that the rose must have sprouted, the lower cut is treated with growth stimulants. The following solution options can be used:
- 1 g of Kornevin bioproduct per 1 liter of water;
- 1 ampoule "Epina" for 2 liters of water;
- 1 ml of Zircon per 10 l of water;
- 0.5 tsp of honey and 500 ml of water;
- aloe juice with water in a ratio of 1: 9.
Cuttings are placed in a nutrient fluid for a day.
Rooting
You can sprout a rose in many ways, including in plain water. The stage lasts from two weeks to a month, rarely longer. At its end, callus is formed on the cuttings - a growth of pale green color. Roots grow underground from callus. And growths on the top of the stem develop into rose leaves.
Method 1 - Standard
Like most plants, a rose can be rooted in water. To do this, cut and processed cuttings are placed in a separate transparent container.
Important rules:
- Use only clean water, defended during the day.
- Give preference to a glass container.
- Protect cuttings from direct sunlight.
- Make sure that water covers only the edge of the stem.
- Change the water every 2 days.
Method 2 - in peat
Suitable conditions for rooting the pink cuttings can be created in an ordinary flower pot. Roots will appear faster than with the first method.
Instruction:
- Select the appropriate container. For one handle, you need a 500 ml pot. You can take a large capacity and root all the cuttings together, but then you should observe a 5 cm indent.
- Disinfect the pot with a weak potassium permanganate solution, alcohol, or something else.
- Use loose soil. The best option is coconut peat. If at hand there is agroperlite, it is mixed with the soil mixture in a ratio of 1: 2.
- Soak peat in water for 15 minutes.
- Put drainage on the bottom of the pot, fill it with a substrate without tamping.
- Make holes in peat about 7–10 cm deep.
- Place the stalk so that the lower kidney is underground.
- Install a greenhouse.
Cuttings of roses are very sensitive and die quickly from changes in temperature and humidity. Greenhouse protects plants. It is very simple to make by covering a plastic box of vegetables with cling film. You can cover the cuttings with plastic cups or even bags. Plants slightly open for several minutes 2-3 times a day to ventilate.
Method 3 - in the potatoes
Potato tubers contain enough moisture and many nutrients.
How to use potatoes to root a store rose:
- Choose a healthy tuber.
- Rinse it and remove the eyes.
- Disinfect with a pale pink solution of potassium permanganate and dry.
- Make a deep hole in the potato.
- Insert the treated rose stalk.
- Deepen the tuber 15 cm into the ground. Only the upper kidney should remain on the surface.
- Install a greenhouse.
- Water and ventilate the cuttings regularly.
For each shank you need to use a separate tuber.
Method 4 - newspapers and packages
This method of germinating roses originated in the United States. At home it is called "burrito". In fact, a burrito is a Mexican dish that is soft stuffed wheat cake. From the cuttings they make its likeness:
- Newspapers are spread out in 2-3 layers and slightly moistened with water.
- 4–7 cuttings are placed in the center and wrapped, forming a “cake”.
- The bundle is placed in an opaque bag (you can trash).
- Choose a place for germination: dark, ventilated, with an air temperature of 14–20 degrees.
- Weekly, the package is checked, spoiled cuttings are removed, and the whole is wrapped in new newspapers and packages.
Maintaining a temperature of 14–20 degrees is a key point. If it is too cold, the plant will hibernate. And in extreme heat, the roots will dry out and fall away.
When will it be possible to plant roses in the ground?
After the formation of a strong root. The best time for planting is spring. At first, it is important to keep seedlings at a temperature of 25 degrees under a greenhouse. Then the plant is gradually tempered, revealing protection. Experienced flower growers are advised to plant the rose first in a pot, and then transplant it together with a clod of earth in open ground.
Which rooting method is better?
All methods are good in their own way. The percentage of rooting roses is about the same. What matters is not so much the method as the observance of all the rules.
So, a rose bush grown from a once presented flower is not a myth at all, but the truth. Sometimes a plan is not obtained at the first attempt. They say that it’s enough for some people to stick a dry stick in the ground, and it will stick out. Others have to bleed and then take care of the cuttings. But we are for a scientific approach.
The success of the operation largely depends on the variety of the flower and the season. Local roses are much easier to root. Dutch roses give sprouts in 10 cases out of 100. As for the season, summer shoots (June ones) are best rooted. In second place are autumn and spring flowers. Least bought are winter roses. They are processed with chemicals, due to which they bloom for a long time. But at the same time, the ability to root formation is significantly lower.
